What is Counselling?

Counselling is an opportunity to talk with a trained professional about anything that may be concerning you. Counselling professionals listen to you properly and give you the time, attention and space to work through your issues. Admiral Counselling is here to explore and discuss any issues you may be experiencing, nothing is considered to be too big or too small.
There are many different approaches to counselling, there are direct approaches, in which the counsellor and client will carry out tasks and address issues as directed by the counsellor. An example of this is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) therapy. Non-direct counselling may employ a therapy such as ‘Person Centred Therapy’ (PCT). In PCT the counsellor provides the space for the client to explore his or her issues and the counsellor assists the client to find their solutions to their problems and issues.

What can I expect from my first session? At your first session, (sometimes referred to as an assessment session), the counsellor will discuss the issues as presented by the client in order to understand what model of counselling will be best suited to meet the client's needs. The first session will usually include a discussion around confidentiality, and what the terms of the counselling agreement are. Importantly, the counsellor will attempt to establish what the client wishes to get from the counselling sessions, what previous counselling experience the client has received, and what the outcomes of these sessions were. Many counsellors do make a charge for the first assessment session.
